Walk smarter.
Your app will “talk” to certain downtown crosswalks to help you cross safely. It may also enable connected vehicles to detect your presence in the crosswalk, alert the driver and potentially prevent a crash.

Can a smartphone app really improve pedestrian safety?

The Tampa Connected Vehicle Pilot is a research project to test the potential safety, mobility and environmental benefits of connected vehicle technology. As a participating pedestrian, you will receive a free smartphone app that will “talk” to some downtown crosswalks to help you cross safely.

If you live or work near the Hillsborough County Courthouse or the Channel District, this app is for you!

On Twiggs Street, your app will communicate with a roadside device at the midblock crosswalk between Jefferson and East streets at the Hillsborough County Courthouse. As you cross Twiggs, approaching drivers whose cars are equipped with connected vehicle technology will be alerted that a pedestrian is in their path.

On Meridian Avenue, you can use your app to request a “walk” signal to cross the six-lane divided highway at the intersections with Twiggs Street, Kennedy Boulevard, Washington Street, Whiting Street, Cumberland Avenue and Channelside Drive. This feature may be especially helpful to anyone who needs extra time to cross.

In some locations on Channelside Drive, your app will communicate with TECO Line streetcars. If you are walking close to the track, you will receive an audible warning when a streetcar near you is starting to move.

Similarly, on certain blocks of Marion Street, Kennedy Boulevard and Jackson Street, your app will alert you with an audible signal if a bus is starting to move on the street near you.

To participate, you must be 18 years or older, have an Android smartphone and walk at least occasionally in the downtown Tampa deployment area. Additional criteria apply, so take the online eligibility questionnaire today.

Don’t delay! If you are a downtown Tampa pedestrian, we want to hear from you.

You may also be interested in participating as a driver. Or, if you’d just like to stay in the know and join the fun, let us know by becoming a fan of the Tampa Connected Vehicle Pilot!
